Andy Weir, author of Project Hail Mary and The Martian, and Drew Goddard, the screenwriter for The Martian, reunited to craft the script starring Ryan Gosling. A lone astronaut, Ryland Grace, wakes up with amnesia on a spaceship millions of miles from Earth, tasked with saving humanity from an extinction-level threat. With a science-driven plot, Weir presents a narrative blending accuracy, humor, and heart in this “hard science” fiction book.

As a public relations specialist, the book left me with one question: How do you keep the public informed about this crisis and solution?

As a disclaimer, I do not represent my employer nor NASA. Mary, there are three main points the project needs to communicate with the public: recognizing a planetary crisis, finding a global solution, preparing for the Hail Mary launch, and staying vigilant for the beetles’ return.

A Planetary Crisis Uncovered

In the early pages of the novel, humanity discovers an invasive interstellar microbe that is absorbing the Sun’s radiation. Fictional statistics frequently cite that a quarter of the planet’s population could perish in 30 years as the Sun’s luminosity drops. Eva Stratt led an international government effort to tackle the astrophage problem at all costs. She would likely hide much of the top-secret and classified information from the public to prevent bad actors from interfering with the planet-saving mission.

In the novel, the American space agency would likely share as much scientific information as possible about astrophage and the planetary crisis. Sharing results in real time garners trust with the American and global public. NASA has a demonstrated history of this tactic in our real world.

Following the surprising launch of Sputnik, the United States moved quickly to create NASA in July 1958. President Eisenhower, acting on the advice of his science advisor James Killian, insisted that this new agency be run by civilians rather than the military. At the time, the Soviet Union was using its space achievements mainly as a tool for power and propaganda. Killian warned that if America simply tried to "beat" the Russians at their own game, it could actually hurt the country's long-term scientific reputation.

Eisenhower made a bold choice: the American space program would be built on a foundation of openness and transparency, operating in the public eye rather than behind a veil of military secrecy. As a result, NASA’s founding document, written in 1958, states the agency shall “provide for the widest practicable and appropriate dissemination of information concerning its activities and the results thereof.”

<a campaign, the tagline “Hope for All Mankind” succinctly illustrates the mission’s importance, reason, and focus. A trio of international scientific and astronautic experts are leaving our solar system to understand why Tau Ceti is not impacted, and potentially find solutions to the astrophage problem. While the name of the project implies this is our desperate attempt to save Earth, nowhere in the public messaging does it allude to this desperation. The messages embody hope for the mission and for a planetary solution.

In the real world, we are experiencing our own triple planetary crisis: overwhelming pollution, global climate change, and anthropocene-driven biodiversity loss. NASA publishes an incredible amount of data and research on the topic, drawing on perspectives from astronaut photography, orbiting satellites, and other remote-sensing missions. Messaging from the American space agency often focuses on finding solutions and hope for the future even when discussing heavy environmental topics.

Launching Humanity’s Last Hope

As launch day arrives, the communications teams share their prepared resources to share the crew and its mission with the world. Key strategies would be to join the mission and humanize the crew. The American space agency would support its astronaut selection.

The comms team could ask Dr. Grace to film a series of videos explaining how he discovered astrophage and the mission goals with common experiments. As a beloved middle school teacher with a highly scientific background, Grace would be an excellent subject-matter expert to convey astrophage-related science to the public. The short documentary-style videos could be released in the weeks leading up to the launch, explaining core scientific concepts such as Newtonian and relativistic physics, solar luminosity, and microorganisms in space.

Additional products could be built around the core videos. Lesson plans to support teachers replicating the demonstrations in their classrooms. Think of it like Bill Nye the Science Guy or Don Pettit’s Saturday Morning Science. These activities allow students to foster STEM curiosity and vicariously prepare with the crew for Tau Ceti.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Alas, tragedy strikes. It takes thirteen years to travel to Tau Ceti, then another thirteen to return. In the novel, the Hail Mary is launched in 2023. The earliest they could get results is 2049 if everything works according to plan.

NASA has a history of long space missions. Voyager 1, launched in 1977, is still transmitting data forty-eight years later as it continues to travel through interstellar space. Landsat 5 held a Guinness World Record for the longest-operating Earth observation satellite for nearly three decades. The difference with the Hail Mary is the lack of communication from the crew and the unknown return, instead of continual data updates.

Perhaps the simplest way to keep the mission alive is by celebrating launch anniversaries, crew birthdays, and other milestones that will keep the public mindful. Many science organizations will likely organize grants and competitions to hear the public’s interim solutions until the beetles return.

In the book, Stratt suspects that humanity cannot survive the coming decades without wars, famine, and other global crises. However, we never learn what happens on Earth. Perhaps as a species, we can band together to use science and the greatest minds to crowdsource solutions to save humanity. We certainly did six years ago, when COVID-19 emerged, leading to rapid vaccine development and a coordinated global response to the pandemic. Throughout the book, Foer tries to strike a balance between nothing matters and everything matters, but inevitably only brings one argument to the kitchen table: do not eat animal products before dinner.

Foer makes a valid argument about the balance of “doing nothing” and “doing everything.” Early in the book, he shares how polio was eradicated in the United States. Franklin D. Roosevelt helped create the March of Dimes in 1938, which became the primary funding source for polio research. One recipient of such funding in 1952 was Jonas Salk. After three years of thorough testing, Salk’s vaccine was declared safe and effective, a cure for polio. Salk had done “everything,” dedicating seven years of his life to medical research and vaccine development.

But polio vaccination rates were low in 1955, due to a public misconception that only infants and toddlers could be stricken with polio. Immunization rates sat at 0.6 percent among teenagers. While the disease mainly affects those under the age of 5, according to the World Health Organization, any unvaccinated individual can contract it. What use is a vaccine no one uses?

On October 28, 1956, an up-and-coming musician named Elvis Presley was preparing for his second appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Before the show went live, Elvis rolled up a sleeve for a New York state official to stick a needle loaded with the polio vaccine in his arm. Elvis flashed a smile for the press who captured the event. Six months later, American youth vaccination rates for polio skyrocketed to 80 percent. Elvis, who compared to Salk did nothing, was also instrumental to the eradication of the disease.

Foer focuses on the duality: a few may have to sacrifice everything to make meaningful change in the world, but many of us have to sacrifice nothing to ensure change.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Animal products (meat, eggs, milk, etc.) contribute to 35% of all greenhouse gas emissions according to a 2023 research paper. This small sacrifice may be too great an ask for most people. It’s one thing to get a small jab into your arm once, or to support soldiers fighting in World War 2 with food rationing, which is another example he shares. Removing a significant contribution to our diet, especially for Americans, may be too great a sacrifice. Foer admits many times throughout the book that he has not fully committed to this dietary switch.

There are many actions individuals can take to help the planet. And Foer is right, sacrificing “everything” and sacrificing “nothing” will be necessary of humanity. But giving a bold challenge without a path forward is inadvisable at best. Perhaps the challenge would feel feasible if Foer provided a scaffold about how to elimate or significantly reduce animal products from one’s diet, which is the approach of the cookbook Protest Kitchen by Carol J. Adams takes.

This book does have me thinking about my animal product in take, but it leaves me without a tangible way to implement the idea. I'm left wondering what other kinds of “nothings” can I sacrifice for the planet.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" Science, after all, is a discipline built on centuries of rigorous standards, constantly evolving and self-correcting. What could possibly shake someone's faith in such a robust institution?

This question was at the forefront of my mind when I finally picked up Jonathan M. Berman's "Anti-vaxxers," a book that had sat on my shelf for five years. I bought the book at the beginning of the pandemic with every intention to read it then, but dedicated all of my reading time to focusing on graduate school and navigating a worldwide crisis.

Berman, one of the founders of the March for Science movement, traces the history of the anti-vaccine movement, spanning from 1796 England to the 2019 Internet age, adding sociopolitical context to each era. The arguments made two centuries ago aren’t far from those made today: safety and efficacy concerns, body autonomy, and distrust in government. The primary difference lies in the method and reach of distribution. Pamphlets and letters circulated only so far compared to the expanse of the internet.

While misinformation, disinformation, and bad actors are riddled in the antivaxx movement, Berman’s research suggests parents are trying to make informed decisions. The depth of the internet makes finding good information a difficult pursuit. I left this book thinking about how to help individuals I know find better, accurate information when relying on a person they trust. Parents and others are looking for accurate vaccine information so they can protect their children. When we belittle, ignore, or bully those with concerns, we only reinforce the belief that they cannot trust us with their personal struggles.

Trusting anything—vaccines, the government, science, a person—is not an overnight phenomenon. It is like the trickle of charging your phone battery. You need to cultivate and commit to the relationship, taking their concerns seriously. Recently, John Green released Everything is Tuberculosis, a 200-page primer on the persistence of a curable yet deadly disease.

With his partnership with Partners in Health and his fanbase, John Green and his brother Hank have raised over thirty million dollars to tackle healthcare in Sierra Leone. In 2019, John Green met Henry, a young tuberculosis patient treated at a government hospital. In the years since Green’s visit, he has become a champion and voice for the fight against the disease and equitable medical systems.

Everything is Tuberculosis strives to bring greater awareness to the 1.5 million people who die from the treatable infectious disease through extensive research, Green’s experiences in Sierra Leone, and the case of Henry’s treatment. Green describes how our world has been shaped by tuberculosis, including beauty standards, fashion, and systemic racism globally.

I’m left wanting more from Green—more about how one man’s experience with tuberculosis leads to the modern cowboy hat, more about the infected young men behind Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassination, more about how the discovery of bacteria led tuberculosis to shift in narrative from a white man’s disease to a black person’s infection. In many ways, it reminds me of an abridged version of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Tuberculosis is a strong introduction to the genre for those not accustomed to science-medical writing.

Towards the end of the book, John Green describes why he wrote Tuberculosis. It left a mark on me in the only way a Green brother can. After writing five young adult fiction novels, Green found a large platform and megaphone to wield. He heard many voices sharing their health stories in Sierra Leone, including Henry, and sought to amplify their words about the forgotten disease and the people it affects. While some may criticize Green’s fiction, one cannot deny his and his brother's impact on making the world a better place. I wonder where my obsessions will take me one day and if I will use them to make the kind of impact Green has.

<a class="image-link image2 Olson was first a scientist — a tenured professor of marine biology, in fact — before completely pivoting and entering film school. He shares what he learned about storytelling in his book so you don’t have to attend film school yourself.

The power of story can help individuals comprehend complex topics such as science. Olson introduces the DNA of those stories with an “And, But, Therefore” model. At a glance, ABT helps a person create the fundamental story pieces: exposition (and), conflict (but), and resolution (therefore). The ABT model you generate becomes an elevator pitch, in which you can add detail where needed depending on your audience.

It should be noted that there are many types of science communication besides narrative format. But delivering information through stories can be a powerful way to communicate. You can use this model to create better presentations, stronger social media posts, and even casual conversation with family, friends, or other non-scientists.

<a National Association of Science Writers created this anthology to help new science writers starting out in the field. Many graduate-level science communication and writing programs require this book for their students.

There are six parts: learning the craft; choosing your market; varying your style; covering stories in life sciences; covering stories in physical and environmental sciences; and communicating to science institutions. Field Guide provides an introduction to everything a science communicator should know.

To be completely honest, I’ve never read this book from front to back, but I have read selections on understanding statistics, reporting from science journals, space science suggestions, and public information officers. If there’s a question you have about general science writing, this book is a solid spot for you to start answering it.

<a published some of their best articles from their free science journalism website. If you haven’t heard of The Open Notebook and you’re looking to be a science journalist, go bookmark their website right now.

The Open Notebook’s mission is to provide knowledge and resources to science, health, and environmental journalists to sharpen their skills. It is the organizations belief that supporting science journalism supports a healthy society.

Similar to A Field Guide, this book hosts a collection of authors who focus on five different topics including becoming a science journalist, finding the science story, gathering information, writing the story, and building expertise. While not outdated in content, A Field Guide misses some important conversations in both the content creation and academic world. Some important chapters in Crafting that aren’t featured in A Field Guide including impostor syndrome and finding diverse voices in science. I wouldn’t say that Crafting replaces A Field Guide, but rather is a good resource for those who feel like they need the next level.

<a Scientist’s Guide to Talking to the Public,” Cornelia Dean created this book to help scientists convey the facts of their expertise. Previously a New York Times editor, Dean now teaches seminars on science communication at Harvard University in which she urges scientists to let their voices reach beyond scholarly publications.

Dean distilled her seminars into this book, where she aims to help scientists improve how they interact with policymakers, journalists, and the public. I like how in this book she highlights unique circumstances like the witness stand, while also covering the basics of communication like knowing your audience.

Unlike the previous books mentioned, this one is more so designed for scientists. Dean highlights how to communicate better about science, with the focus on those who have little to no experience in sharing their field. I still recommend this because Dean explains SciComm principles so plainly and clearly.

<a Laura shares Gen Y's space beliefs nearly verbatim to their interviews.

---

I was excited for this book for so long. Laura Forczyk self-published "Rise of the Space-Age Millennials: The Space Aspirations of a Rising Generation," a book that promised the Gen Y perspective of the space industry from those young professionals in the field.

I didn't help kickstart it but set aside funds to buy it when available. I brought it to my brother's graduation ceremony in hopes of finishing it in that 3 hours of time (he had a very large class).

If I had a favorite part, it's the introduction. Forcyzk details how she wrote the book and the logic of the chapters and poses the challenge that if someone can do it better, she'll support them in doing so.

I could write a better book.

What this book lacks is real analysis. There is no demographic information about who we are talking to beyond the title "Space Age Millennials." Forcyzk doesn't go further than sharing what an interviewee said for all 100 individuals.

It's not to Forcyzk's fault. She's not a social scientist by training, as she admitted. She's an astrophysicist. This book is chapters of paragraphs summarizing the interviewee's beliefs and thoughts with very little analysis. At the end of a chapter, Forcyzk shares her thoughts and experiences (as a millennial), then about three paragraphs of analysis.

After about three chapters, I couldn't finish appreciating the read for what it is: a first step in research to the modern space age. I anticipate reading it in the fall to help provide some qualitative elements to my thesis. But this book is just a series of interviews, I'll have to provide all the analysis myself.

The world needed this book, and it's an excellent first step and conversation piece. I hope to build on what Forcyzk attempted to do. If you want to read young professionals' beliefs about the space age one-by-one to draw your conclusions, be my guest. Beyond researchers, I don't know who would.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" To those who know everything about Apollo, a new space program appears.

--

Sputnik launched on October 4, 1957, propelling the space race forward with the goal of showcasing the scientific superiority of Communist nations. Soviet Russia held many of the "firsts" of the space challenges.

First artificial Earth Satellite: Sputnik, October 4, 1957

First on the Moon: Luna 2 probe, September 14, 1959

First animals to successfully orbit the Earth: Belka & Strelka, August 19, 1960

First man in space: Yuri Gagarin, April 21, 1961

First woman in space: Valentina Tereshkova, June 16, 1963

First spacewalk: Alexei Leonov, March 18, 1965

First remote-controlled rover on another celestial body: Lunokhod 1, November 17, 1970

This book was interesting because it contrasts with my knowledge of the US space program. America focused on piloted rockets, and Russia focused on controlled rockets. The humans inside were more a piece of propaganda, riding the various Voshkod and Soyuz into Earth's Orbit. America outrightly refused for women to fly, but Russia used one woman to fly into space as a political message. America launched its rockets live, whereas Russia reported successes the day after (failures typically went unreported). What fell apart for the USSR was when leaders passed away, which stopped the vision of the space program.

Organized by year, with notes of where the US space program was at that point in time, this book clearly shares inside stories about the program and honest clarity with failures on Roscosmos' part.

It's most similar to a history book, so it's not for everyone. But if you have the chance to learn about another space program, take this down from the shelf.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" Rocket engineers around the world began creating theoretical rockets, confined to the scribbles of academic notebooks. Each eagerly hoped for the future reality of space travel.

During the Cold War, the aerospace industry began fueling young engineers via trade magazine ads placed in journals like Missiles and Rockets and Aviation Week. As a three-time NASA Intern, I'm pretty sure I love space. In fact, beyond that, I enjoy teaching people about space and other sciences.

Bad Astronomy is a book I received for Christmas in 2019. I follow @BadAstronomer on Twitter, and he has amazing tweets about space science that keep me excited for what's next in our world.

This book is amazing. Chapter by chapter it debunks anything from why the sun isn't yellow to how the moon appears larger in the sky at the horizon. Phil Plait, the author, takes the reader through a journey to explain the nuances of why people believe this incorrectly, and why it works a particular way according to scientific analysis.

My only complaint is it's a dense, hard read. This surprised me, as Plait is a successful blogger. I can only read things a chapter at a time. Sometimes I have to reread chapters or physically draw a picture to understand how he's explaining something.

Physics can be hard. Astronomy can be hard. And to explain it to a layperson who has no background in sciences, let alone may believe the things he's debunking, can be hard. I have great respect for what Plait does on his Bad Astronomy blog. In fact, he is excellent at the format, in the same way I could read a chapter at a time.

The book is well done, just not the light summer read I anticipated. If astronomy and science readings are interesting to you, I would definitely recommend them.

The Space Barons

(⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

Andrea Lloyd

This book review was originally posted to my ko-fi page.

Science - 🔬🔬🔬

Difficulty- 📖📖📖

Target Audience- Space Policy Specialists, History Buffs

In a sentence? The world's billionaires echo the barons of the past in the new space age, with much to be discovered.

--

Christian Davenport reports on defense and space topics for The Washington Post from a finance perspective. His Twitter header describes the Space Barons as "Ambition. Ego. Rivalries. Adventure. And a New Future In Space."

Of course, what shouted to me, "GET THIS BOOK," while casually scrolling on Amazon, was the ties to Blue Origin, SpaceX, and other new private space companies as we entered "a new golden space age," as Bezos quotes. In May 2020, it seemed like a good enough book to stay abreast about the topic as I continued reading and researching for some future thesis.

Hot dog, this book was an excellent read.

Davenport clearly gives history to the space era we live in, including information about the Constellation project's death and the rise of the Commercial Crew Program, which is something I desperately wanted more information about but didn't know where to find it.

He also gives greater context to Bezos' & Musk's internal motivations. Events growing up primed them for the space companies they now own, and now both want to make space more accessible to the average individual, just as airplanes are today.

Read in a matter of two days, this book started me down a path of how NASA, the "Old Boys" (Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Boeing, ULA, etc), and the Space Barons (Blue Origin, SpaceX, Virgin Galatic, etc) significantly compare in advertising, public relations, and funding.

It would be interesting to look into how modern space marketing compares to historic space marketing. Is there more or less of it? How does this impact our understanding of these companies? Do these companies' ads and media events actually increase public engagement with science and space programs?

Davenport touches on a few of these points, but much remains to be found. Space Marketing is a new industry with more space to research and mature.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" 🔬🔬🔬🔬🔬

Difficulty- 📖

Target Audience - Young Readers

In a sentence? Coyote Peterson shares exactly what is running through his head when on wild, brave adventures to bring nature to the Pack.

---

If you haven't heard of Coyote Peterson's Brave Wilderness channel by now, you're missing out. He and his team of four venture into the great expanse in all forms--hikers, scuba divers, kayakers-- to encounter wild animals and bring them close to the camera and viewer. Ultimately, if Steve Irwin had a YouTube channel, these weekly updates would be everything everyone is watching.

Brave Adventures (2017) is Coyote's first book. An avid reader and Youtube watcher, I had purchased it immediately, prepared to dive in wherever he wanted to take me. The book comprises 10 adventures, which can stand alone if necessary for a reading style. Two of them are exclusive, new tales from when Coyote was a pup, capturing how those young experiences with a snapping turtle and rogue male buffalo shaped who he came to be. The remaining 8 are behind-the-scenes thought processes of Brave Wilderness, where you can find the accompanying episodes for visuals if warranted, although Coyote does an excellent job describing the details of each scene, all while peppering in wildlife facts about the animals.

The book is excellent for all readers, whether it is for your own enjoyment or your offspring's. I highly would recommend it. Easy to digest, finished in two days.

But that's not where I'm going with this blog post. These vignettes were enjoyable but left me wanting to share my own life. I will be the first to admit I have done cool things. I've visited all but 7 states. Three years ago, I completed my SCUBA diving training and have dove in Bonaire. I've visited a handful of countries across the world. But I suppose because it's my own life, it doesn't feel spectacular.

I imagine writing a book like Brave Adventures -- granted, once you have honed and perfected an excellent story-telling voice like he has -- is relatively easy. Of course, it is never easy to pull from the accumulated human experiences stored in the electric pulses of our brains, translating into a decipherable narrative of 50,000 words in a compelling and interesting, yet understandable order. It seems easier than crafting an entire new fictional world in

The catch is you have to have a life worth telling about, and each and every one of us is too humble to see our lives as grand enough to be book-worthy.

You are one human of seven billion. You are experiencing life differently than everyone else in some way, shape, or form. Maybe you also eat Cheerios for breakfast, but you truly have experiences that are unique to you and are worth sharing. Life has so many variables, I want to see your equations.

Reading this book has inspired me to be open, candid, and vulnerable with audiences.
